Holiday Inspiration

I have been wanting to make something for every season and I finally found what I was looking for to do it!  I found this stand at my local quilt shop Thimbles and Threads.

I started with Halloween because those were the colors of scraps that I had to see if I liked how it was going to turn out.

I used my cricut machine to cut out the shapes.

So...What do you think?  I think they might be even better if I were to use a "line" of fabrics but I didn't want to get that involved if it didn't turn out as I wanted it.

All Star

This fabric is All Star by Rileigh Blake Designs.  She is quickly becoming one of my favorite fabric designers.  Love the orange and blue combination, and even better I got it on sale!

Half triangles finished, ready to be trimmed, all 140 of them!

Finished top.  It actually turned out a bit larger than what I had anticipated so I had to take a break and go to the quilt shop to get another yard of fabric.

Pinned and rolled up ready to be quilted!

Finished Frolic

Finally finished this quilt!  This is the one my sewing machine broke on as soon as I started quilting it before Christmas.  I received a few quilting stencils for Christmas from my sister so I tried one of them out on this quilt.  This is my first free motion quilt and it wasn't as terrifying as I thought it might be!

Of course I did have to rip this block out 4 times before I finally got it right!

This one shows up a little better on the lighter fabric.

All rolled up!

Sweet Tart Dough

250g butter
250g sugar
2 eggs
500g flour

Using paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar together.  Add the eggs one at a time and work until well combined.  Sift the flour, then add to the butter mixture.  Be careful not to overwork the dough to maintain a light a delicate texture.  Chill.

Lemon Curd

3 eggs
167 g sugar
117 g butter
13.5 g cornstarch
2 lemons, juice and zest

In a saucepan, bring the lemon juice, zest, cornstarch and sugar to a boil.  Temper the eggs by slowly adding the liquid while whisking.  Pour back into saucepan and bring to a boil again.  Mixture will be very thick.  Take the mixture off the heat and add the butter.  Pour into a bowl and cover directly on top of the curd with plastic wrap.  Cool completely.

Putting it all together

Roll out your chilled tart dough to cover the bottom of a pie or tart pan.  Bake in a 350 degree oven until lightly golden brown.  Cool to room temperature.  Pour the lemon curd into the baked shell.

Meringue

5 egg whites
1/2 cup sugar

Using a clean dry mixing bowl with the whisk attachment, whip the egg whites.  Once the egg whites have come to soft peak, add the sugar and continue to whisk until stiff peaks form.  Do not make the meringue until you are ready to add it to the pie and bake it or else it will fall.

Spread the meringue over the lemon curd and bake in a 350 degree oven until brown.
